GArMEnt: Modular Smart Gaming Wearable

This project is a Research-to-Business(R2B) initiative established by the Gamification Group at Tampere University in Finland. Its goal is to design and develop intelligent wearable devices for gaming scenarios which, by integrating motion tracking and physiological sensors, can help reshape gamified healthy exercise habits. Through early-stage ideation and team brainstorming, the project team adopted principles of modular design and assembly-based design, with the aim of creating an intelligent wearable device that can, in its fully assembled form, meet everyday wearing needs, but can also be disassembled into smaller modules with different functions and structures. In this way, it can flexibly adapt to a wide range of gaming scenarios and track diverse types of player behavior data.

To systematically explore the design space of modular wearable gaming devices, we conducted a Wizard-of-Oz user experiment based on five low-tech experience prototypes and four test games in different genres. In the experiment, we simulated and tested various anticipated functional modules, such as gesture recognition, motion trajectory tracking, thermal feedback and EEG (brainwave) detection. We then carried out qualitative data analyses of the collected user feedback, including thematic analysis and affinity diagramming, and derived a set of design guidelines to inform the next stage of functional prototype design.

At present, this R2B project has passed the second round of funding from Business Finland and is now in the stage of preparing to establish a startup company. The figure below shows the conceptual design of the next-generation functional prototype.
